Cosmetics & Pharmaceuticals
Choosing the right mill depends on your specific material characteristics. For contamination-sensitive electronic pastes (silver or solder), our SYS and SDS series equipped with ceramic rollers provide the perfect metal-free solution. For heavy-duty high-end inks (offset and UV), the SYS and S series deliver the high output and advanced cooling necessary for continuous production. Additionally, for cosmetics and pharmaceuticals where hygiene is paramount, our SDS and custom special series feature sanitary stainless steel casings to meet strict industry standards.

What is a Three Roll Mill?

A three roll mill is a highly specialized machine that uses immense shear force—created by three horizontally positioned rolls rotating in opposite directions and at different speeds—to mix, refine, and disperse high-viscosity materials.
How Does the Grinding Process Work?
The material is fed between the slower Feed Roll and the Center Roll. As it passes through the extremely narrow gap, agglomerates are crushed. It then moves to the gap between the Center Roll and the fast-spinning Apron Roll (typically operating at a 1:3:9 speed ratio), where maximum shearing occurs. Finally, a Scraper Knife removes the processed paste.

Core Components Breakdown

  • Rollers:
The heart of the machine, requiring perfect cylindricity.
  • Material Guides (End Plates):
Contain the unrefined material in the feeding zone.
  • Scraper Blade:
An adjustable knife tightly pressed against the apron roll to harvest the final product.
  • Hydraulic/Mechanical Gap Adjusters:
    Control the distance between rollers.
Why Choose TRM for High Viscosity?

Why Choose TRM for High Viscosity?

Unlike bead mills, which can suffer from media clogging when processing extremely thick pastes, Three Roll Mills can effortlessly handle viscosities up to 1,000,000 cPs. Furthermore, the open-roller design provides a massive surface area for superior temperature control and outgassing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Lab models (SDS series) focus on high precision, minimal material waste, and accurate data logging for formulation development. Production models (SYS series) are built with massive hydraulic systems and cooling capacities to handle continuous, high-throughput manufacturing.

Yes. For abrasive materials or applications where metal contamination is strictly prohibited (like battery slurries or electronic pastes), we recommend configuring the mill with Zirconia or Alumina Ceramic Rollers and specialized ceramic scrapers.

Manual adjustment relies on the operator's experience to turn handwheels, which is cost-effective but can lead to slight batch-to-batch variations. Hydraulic adjustment utilizes PLC controls to automatically set and maintain the gap pressure, ensuring absolute repeatability and significantly reducing labor costs.
